    本研究では、ブータンにおけるビデオゲームの普及に焦点を当て、ブータンという血縁・地縁が強く社縁的な繋がりが乏しい地域において、ビデオゲームという情報通信技術の発展により生まれた遊びを通じて、どのようなネットワーク社会が生成され得るのか、その過程を明らかにしていくことを目的としている。 2021年度は、2020年度に続き、新型コロナウイルス感染症（COVID-19）の国際的流行により海外渡航を伴う現地調査は不可能であった。すでに2年以上続くこの状況下において可能な調査方法を現地協力者とともに模索した結果、質問紙とオンラインビデオ会議システムを利用した半構造化インタビューを実施することとなり、2021年9月と12月に、それぞれ100件と202件のインタビュー調査結果を得ることができた。これは、ゲームプレイヤー・非ゲームプレイヤーの両方を含んだスノーボールサンプリングによる調査であり、携帯電話・スマートフォンの利用歴、ビデオゲームのプレイ履歴、ビデオゲームに対する意識を問うものであった。同調査結果は、2022年度中に学会発表を目指して分析を進めている。 また、上記インタビュー調査に先立って、2021年8月にはICAS（International Convention of Asia Scholars）において"What Does It Mean to Play a Video Game in Bhutan?"と題する研究発表を行った。これは、ビデオゲーム史、および、ビデオゲーム研究（Game Studies）の歴史を概観しながら、ブータンというこれまで世界にゲーム産業において未開の土地であった場所において、ビデオゲームが広くプレイされるようになった経緯とその意義を問うものであった。同発表内容は、2022年度中に論文集として発刊される予定である。

    This research had tried to draw out the unique image of the Information Society in the Kingdom of Bhutan. With the cooperation of the Royal University of Bhutan, participatory observations for university students had conducted four times in three years. Focusing on the usage of mobile phones, it is true that most of informants are using global standard applications such as Facebook and Instagram. However, the characteristics of Bhutanese can be found in their attitudes when using such apps. And that feature is linked to the unique idea of the Bhutanese' sense of time and space. Then, that sense is developed in Bhutan, the Information Society without industrialization.

    本研究は、ブータンにおける情報とメディアのエスノグラフィを記述することを目的としてスタートした。平成27年度は、調査ビザ取得、調査対象地域の選定、予備調査、および、本調査に向けた下調査を行うことを計画しており、これに沿って以下のとおり研究を実施した。 まず、平成27年10月より調査ビザ取得に着手し、受け入れ先となるブータン王立大学シェラブツェ校のスタッフと打ち合わせを重ねた。しかし、研究者が所属する早稲田大学とブータン王立大学との間に協定関係が結ばれていないことを理由に暗礁に乗り上げ、より活動や期間を制限された種類のビザ取得に切り替える必要が生じた。したがって、平成27年度中の調査ビザ取得を断念し、翌年の本調査に向けてビザ交渉を継続することとした。また、調査対象地域の選定は、ビザ交渉に時間を要したため十分に協議することができず、予備調査で現地渡航した際に詳細を打ち合わせることを確認した。 予備調査は、平成27年11月1日から同月20日までの日程で実施した。現地で、研究協力を要請した教員と面会し、ブータンにおける情報通信技術の普及状況やメディア利用の実態についてヒアリングを行うとともに、調査対象地域として、東部のタシガン県、南部のサムツェ県を候補として選定し、滞在期間中に実際に当該地を訪れて予備的な資料収集を行った。続いて、平成28年3月6日から同月20日までの日程で、本調査に向けた下調査を実施した。下調査では、予備調査で実施できなかった本調査設計の参考とするための学生へのアンケート調査を実施したほか、新たに調査対象地域候補として、中部のブムタン県、西部のティンプー県を訪問し、予備資料の収集を行った。 なお、平成28年4月1日付けで平成28年度 若手研究（Ｂ）の内定通知があったため、本研究は平成27年度を以て終了し、平成28年度より若手研究（Ｂ）に研究を引き継ぐこととした。
