    This study aims at universally accessible Japanese language education for visually impaired learners. We conducted the following basic surveys for building an information network: a survey of overseas offices of Japan Foundation and Japanese language teachers of Japan Overseas Cooperation Volunteers to find visually impaired learners and a survey of Japanese language teachers actually engaged in education for visually impaired learners inside/outside Japan. The results indicate demands for expert supports and information on special arrangements in JLPT. Based on the results, we present practical issues in Japanese language education for visually impaired learners and the contents of a trial website created as an information platform.

    The purpose of this study is to find solutions to issues, of which three were encountered, with teaching Japanese to a blind student. The first is difficulty with visual information such as pictures. The second is the difficulty with discriminating and understanding words. The third is the difficulty with understanding the entire picture regarding information about tasks or questions. As for solutions, we used oral descriptions and realia for the first difficulty, we made example sentences for the second, and for the third, we described beforehand, how and in what order tasks were to be carried out.

    This study examines the course design of a Japanese language listening class for advanced international students and assesses the pedagogical benefits of using Moodle. Moodle is a software package for producing internet-based courses and web sites as well as offering students increased accessibility to extensive on-line learning resources, which in addition, enables teachers to encourage self-directed learning amongst students. This report will also discuss possibilities for improving the application of Moodle to listening courses.

    Numeral classifiers are taught at the primary level in Japanese language education. However objects that are countable by numeral classifiers are not limited to the basic words taught at the primary level. Through researching drama scripts, I examined the adequacy of the way the numeral classifier "Hon" is taught in Japanese textbooks. The numeral classifier "Hon" can count not only things that are long and thin, but also things that have a long and thin image, like cassette tapes. This cognitive element makes individual study difficult, emphasizing the need for numeral classifiers to be taught with a textbook in the classroom.

    This study aims at the universal access of the Japanese Language Proficiency Test Braille booklet test. We embarked on the environmental improvement of Japanese language education to learners who are visually impaired, and support the learning process until they take the Japanese Language Proficiency Test exam. As a result of this study, we have created a tuition assistance manual for the sighted Japanese teachers who do not have the knowledge of the education for the visually impaired. The manual web site "to touch, hear, taste Japanese" has been opened to the public.
