Research Grants & Projects

  • An Empirical Study on The Development of Print Media and The Role of Libraries in Modern Society, Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology, Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research(基盤研究(B)), Shinichi TODA, To elucidate empirically the relationship between the development of print media and the modern libraries from Meiji Era to the present in Japan, we collected and organized quantitative data on publishing industry, library services and education systematically and comprehensively. Through this research, various interrelationships have been found among the print media, between print media and libraries, or between the economic situation and print media/libraries.
  • Development of an Automatic Composition System for Dance Using a 3D Motion Archive, Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology, Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research(基盤研究(B)), Bin UMINO
  • The raison d'etre and the social function of libraries in network environment, Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology, Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research(基盤研究(C)), Shinichi TODA, It is inevitable that the raison d'etre of libraries based on the traditional print media becomes weaker and the social function of libraries becomes less important, because the diffusion of the electronic network media will remarkably change the systems of information distribution and of knowledge accumulation. However, although impressionistic analyses are abundant, no theories that specify the meanings and the functions of libraries in the new environment has been proposed yet, either from librarians or scholars. This research aimed at theorizing the raison d'etre and the social functions...
  • Development of 3D-motion Database for Dance, Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology, Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research(基盤研究(C)), Bin UMINO, The purpose of this project is to discuss and examine the method to organize. human motion data with the goal of building a human motion database and its retrieval system. The general operation of information organization requires three processes; (1)to convert raw data to primary information which must be segmented into manipulated units for the benefit of information storage and retrieval; (2)to generate secondary information from primary one, such as description, annotation, and cataloging data; (3)to make reasonable linkage between primary information and secondary one for effective and ...
  • Database Search Agent for Network Information Resources, Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology, Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research(基盤研究(B)), Shuichi UEDA, the database searching service since the 1960s is providing host-terminal computing. But, current developments in open systems computing, networking, client/server computing and standards for information management are changing today's systems. Bibliographic databases are most useful databases and they are provided by online database service, CD-ROM,OPAC and Internet. The World Wide Web will influence the design of database searching of the future as will users' damands for wider access. Because many users of these database are faced to difficult to access in the complexed circumstance, dat...
