  • Cognitive Mechanisms on Opposition, Contrast and Negation
    Date (from‐to) : 2005
According to Johnson, we categorize our experiences, and the experiences are in the containers. To negate something is to think something being out of the container, and out of the category. This is consistent with Langacker’s view of negation. Negation is closely connected to opposition. There are two types of oppositions. One is contradictory opposition (Horn 1989:268-273), which does not have the middle. It is a binary opposition. The other is contrary opposition, which allows a gradability and scalarity. The distinction between contradictory opposition (man vs. woman, odd vs. even, etc.) and contrary opposition (hot vs. cold, happy vs. sad) has an important role in semantic changes.
