    Copyright © 2014 Noriko Sugie.This study explores patterns of information-seeking behavior of public library users through statistical analysis of quantitative data. A behavioral investigation using radio frequency identification (RFID) and a questionnaire survey were conducted at Chiyoda Public Library in Japan in 2012. Data was obtained on the time spent in the library, travel distance, traveling path, time spent browsing in each zone and time spent browsing books by subject. Probability density for visiting points in the library was estimated from users' positional data gathered in the behavioral investigation in 2012. The results of the questionnaire survey were used to identify behavioral differences between two groups. As a result, it was found that users' visiting points concentrated on the general book zone, users who borrowed materials walk around mainly in the general book zone, and users who did not borrow materials visited fewer points.

    This study examines the possibility of applying radio frequency identification (RFID) technology as a method to collect quantitative data on library user behavior, and thus determine common features. An innovative method of users observation was conducted at Chiyoda Public Library in 2012. Each user was asked to carry an antenna to receive the radio waves emitted from RFID tags, and a personal digital assistant (PDA) to record the data, and went about using the library as usual. RFID tags attached to books and magazines were used to identify the locations of users. Data was obtained on the time spent in the library, travel distance, traveling path, time spent browsing in each zone and time spent browsing books by subject. It was found that the users who spent less than 30 minutes in the library made up the largest percentage of these groups, while some users spent more than 2 hours. It was also found that users tended to browse general books more than other materials. Copyright © 2012 Noriko Sugie.

    To analyze the information-seeking behavior of public library users, an RFID location identification system was used to collect data on the time users spent in each zone and their traveling paths. The results showed that one third of library users stayed in the library for less than 30 minutes, whereas a few users stayed more than 120 minutes. Users spent about 80% of their time in the general book zone and less than 8% in the computer zone where they could access the internet and databases. It was confirmed that the method can gather sufficiently accurate data to explain library users' information-seeking behavior, which will be useful for future studies.

    Preliminary experiment on library users' information seeking behavior using RFID(Radio Frequency Identification) technology was conducted in the university library. Data on "Traveling path of participants", "Time to explore each zone", "Time to explore primary and secondary sources", "Time to explore information sources by subjects" were gained. We could gain patterns of users' traveling path and kinds of information resources.

    本研究では,わが国の公共図書館において,図書館が用意する各種サービスや調べるための環境を一般の利用者がどのように利用し,求める情報を入手しているかを明らかにすることを目的としている。2005年度から2006年度にかけては利用者の情報探索行動を解明するための観点を得るために,公共図書館の利用者への半構造化インタビューを行い,観点としてのカテゴリを構築してきた。2007年度も引き続き同様の手法による調査を実施し2005年度,2006年度分と合わせて35名の利用者から逐語録を得ることができた。本年度はこれらの結果を合わせて質的分析を行いカテゴリの修正,補強を行った。 調査対象者への主な質問項目は,(1)調査対象者の基礎的情報,(2)普段,どのようにして図書館を利用しているか,(3)図書館でどのような探索を行っているか,(4)資料や情報を入手するまでの具体的なプロセスと使用したツールの事例,(5)レファレンスサービスやレファレンスコレクションをどのように認識しているか,と設定した。基本的な調査内容や手法は2005年度,2006年度と同様だが,調査結果の分析を終えて不足しているカテゴリに関する具体的な発言を引き出せるよう努めた。発言の逐語録から利用者の情報探索に関わる箇所を切り出し,切り出した文章をコード化し,分類し,2006年度までに構築されたカテゴリを修正,補強した。その結果,利用者がどのようにして情報を入手しているかを解明するための観点としてのカテゴリには,探索に対する認識や知識,情報ニーズの状態,探索手段,探索行動のパターンなどが得られた。さらに情報ニーズの状態が探索手段や探索行動のパターンに影響を与えるという共通の傾向と,探索手段に対する認識や知識は探索手段に影響を与えるもののその内容には個人差が大きいという傾向を見いだすことができた。
