The purpose of this study is to clarify the challenges of the new growth stage of the retail internationalization process, and focus on the "domestic and foreign competitions" between local companies and Japanese companies. In addition, we considered restrictions on major foreign capitals in the Asian market and the impact on regional and social structures.
We conclude the“embedding”approach that has a deep relationship with local communities and societies is crucial for the sustainable growth in retail nationalization, as well as adaptation and innovation .

With the background of domestic market shrinkage due to an aging society and declining population, Japanese major convenience stores have been expanding for overseas markets. This research aims to analyze and rationalize the localization process of Japanese style convenience stores through accumulated actual investigation of each Japanese convenience store’s internationalization.
With an example of most globalized convenience store Family Mart, we have clarified the localizing process into Asian areas by comparing internationalization of several Japanese convenience stores. We have also proposed an analysis framework “Business System of Convenience Store”, and explained the relationship between retail internationalization and dynamic capability. Consequently, we have introduced and investigated the embedding concept of retail internationalization.

This research placed a particular focus on revisiting the key concepts, traditional theories and hypotheses that are deemed to be central to the academic studies into retailing and distributive trades. Despite the importance of sharing these knowledge among the academics in this discipline across the globe, there have only been a handful of publications that tackle the issues. Such an ever widening gap between the potential strong need for it and the reality has made it difficult for the younger academics to tap into the research into the complex world of macro-marketing. It has also been a barrage for fostering international joint research activities.
In the face of these situations, this research project has made a long list of classic theories, models and hypotheses that are centered around retail and distributive trades and attempted to test their validity and relevance to the phenomenon in the real world and the data that are made public in the form of statistical accounts.
