    本研究は、「現時点では流通量が極めて限定的だが、今後流通量が増大した場合のインパクトが大きいと考えられる食品」を対象に、海外製品との競合が本格化した場合の消費者の食品需要を解明することを第一の目的としている。その目的達成のために設定された小課題のうち、小課題1（将来的に国内流通が本格化し、国産品との競合が見込まれる安価な外国産食品を対象に、我が国の消費者需要を明らかにする）および小課題2（海外の関税削減・撤廃等で、将来的に海外における流通の本格化が見込まれる良食味の国産食品を対象に、海外の消費者需要を明らかにする）に関して、本年度は対象食品の特性を把握するとともに、消費者需要を把握するための本調査・経済実験を実施することとした。また、小課題4（貿易自由化の進展が我が国の食品生産に与える影響を定量的に明らかにする）に関しては、小課題1および2の対象食品に影響を及ぼし得る自由貿易・経済連携協定を選定し、関連既存研究のサーベイを行うこととした。 消費者需要の分析では、ブドウおよびミニトマトを対象に経済実験を実施した。ブドウの分析では、機能性成分や香りの持続性を向上したブドウに対し、消費者が有意に高い金銭評価を行ったことや、個人属性や食料消費行動の違いによって金銭評価が異なることを定量的に明らかにした。他方、ミニトマトの分析では、支払いを伴う離散選択実験およびランダム係数ロジットモデルを用い、色や形、成分に特徴のあるミニトマトに対する支払意思額を推計し、支払いを伴わない離散選択実験では仮想バイアスが生じることを示すとともに、個人属性や食料消費行動の違いが支払意思額に与える影響を明らかにした。 小課題4については、TPPを含む複数の貿易協定を対象に、自由化の効果に関する最新の研究結果を調査した。

    This study quantitatively analyzed the effect of trade liberalization in the trans-pacific region on Japanese industries including agriculture using applied microeconomic methods. In the analysis of consumers' evaluation for foreign agricultural products, by implementing taste experiments of foreign rice varieties, we estimated Japanese consumers' willingness-to-pay for them compared to that for a domestic rice variety. Regarding the analysis of imperfect competition in foodsystems, we showed that the Japanese food industry has become oligopolistic since 2011 using establishment-level microdata. We also analyzed the effect of the trans-pacific partnership (TPP) agreement. After carefully considering assumptions and the models in previous simulation analyses about the effects of free trade agreements on Japanese economy, we conducted simulation analyses about the effect of the TPP agreement and showed possible future outcomes in the Japanese economy.

    The purpose of this research is to show degrees of imperfect competition and price transmission in the long marketing processes (food system) from the procurement of agricultural profucts overseas to domestic food consumption using the analytical methods of economics and statistics. Among the main findings of this research, we found that the degree of imperfect competition of the Japanese food industry has been lowered since the early 2000s. We also drew the brand-level degrees of imperfect competition of beer and beer-taste beverages (including non-alcoholic beers) in Japan. By employing the simulation analyses of price transmission in the food system, we quantitatively analyzed the effects of the change in future trade environments on the Japanese economy including the agriculture and food industries.

    New approaches in food consumption analysis have been developed in order to adapt to recent changes of consumer behavior. The main purpose of this study is to analyze the food consumption behavior and farmer’s decision making using behavioral economics and newly developed econometric method. We clarified the following points. (1)The uncertainty of income and the attitude towards risks are important viewpoints of farmers' behavior, (2)The characteristics of public good of foods and the possibility of supply, and (3)The nature of consumer evaluation against food safety incidents.

    Contrary to the expectation that a high grain price would benefit international traders and agricultural producers equally, the profit of smallholding producers in developing countries are not strongly linked to the price observed in the international market, a likely result of the oligopsony and information asymmetry inherent throughout the grain supply chain. This project developed a theoretical explanation for this market failure and then conducted empirical decomposition of factors preventing agricultural development.

    This project investigated the potential welfare effects brought about by East Asian common agricultural policy under various scenarios concerning free trade agreements between Japan and non-East Asian countries/regions. The models used in the analysis incorporated the characteristics of typical farms in each country/region, data on which were collected from the field as part of the project activities. This approach enabled the computation of the welfare effects on the farm level as well as on the aggregate level for each economy.
