We highlighted human vulnerability and its related notions such as suffering, empathy, care, receptivity, and responsibility, thereby successfully providing a more nuanced picture of human agency than mainstream action theorists did. Many of theorists on human agency have placed an overriding emphasis on the self-governing dimension of agency, and thus largely overlooked the vulnerable aspects that are central to understanding the nature of relational agents like us. To fill in this lacuna, we adopted an interdisciplinary approach, and fully explored the fundamental implications of human vulnerability for the theory of human agency.

This project aims to clarify the reflexive relation between academic knowledge and society from a theoretical and empirical point of view. Our research group has established databases which include information of articles in several sociological journals, presentations in sociological conferences and the organizational processes of several sociological associations. We focus on the following 5 aspects based on those databases, (1) the change of governmental higher education policies in Japan and its influences, (2) the general trends in sociological articles published in several Japanese sociological associations, (3) the trends in presentations read at the annual meetings of several Japanese sociological associations, (4) the trends in founding of sociological associations in Japan, (5) the attitudes of the general members of The Japan Sociological Society toward their teaching and researching activities. We have published our research findings as a research report.

We made some opinion surveys, one of which is held all over the Japan in 2014 collecting about 1500 answers from 2500 samples, for find what recognition can change Japanese people’s opinion about penal punishment? In Japan, supporter of capital punishment has been large majority. Furthermore, according to the opinion surveys carried out by Cabinet Office, Japanese People wants more and more severe punishment against crimes. However, they don’t know well real situation of crime or the practice of criminal justice. We found that as a person knowing well, he become tolerant for criminals. But this kind of knowledge cannot change so much their opinion. On the contrary, under the supposition to have some false accusation among inmates sentenced death penalty, 70% of Japanese people agree with stopping temporarily the execution. However, even in this condition, majority of them don’t admit abolishing death penalty.

Our study group get the conclusion that the shared and pre-theoretical understanding of the standard for the perception, inference and background knowledge supports shared action. We made a conjecture that such shared understanding depends on our affinity in body and perception and is gained by our cooperative life in our society. Besides that, empathy and emotional involvement plays an important role in that process. To prove this conjecture, we focused on the topic of the body and communication which is the basis of the empathy and emotional involvement in first year. In 2nd year, we reviewed the concept of empathy through the organization of the theories of phenomenology and care. In the final year, we studied the relation of the empathy and the shared action. After three years' research, we reach the conclusion that it is necessary to study on the passive agency which is influenced by the situations and the other persons.

We have made clear the points of collective action theories developed by the analytic philosophy, phenomenology, and sociology, and discussed about requisite conditions forcollective action, its peculiar principles of intention, validity of reductionism and causal theory, etc. Our discussions were opened to the public in the annual research colloquium, and now appear in the volumes of Studies on Action Theories(vol.1-2.Also the 3rd. volume will appear soon).

This research was projected as a part of "sociology of knowledge," which expected to explore structural changes in knowledge of science, everyday knowledge, and the relationship between them. Two surveys were conducted ; a survey of syllabuses for sociological education in 25 universities for the past 40 years and a questionnaire survey addressed to sociologists in Japan. Through these surveys, several aspects of changes in sociological knowledge have been identified.
