    This handbook compiles the most up-to-date research on transnational families. It employs a dialogue between classical approaches and cutting-edge directions in transnational family research to identify continuities and changes in terms of socioeconomic disparities and actors, and to analyze coexistence. Further, the volume adopts a twofold global and international comparative perspective. On the one hand, it focuses on different migratory flows around the world and describes their entangled logics; on the other, it is written by an international group of contributors, with a diverse range of professional backgrounds. Their contributions are based on sound empirical research, and explore geographical regions around the world. The handbook presents different thematic perspectives on transnational families, including an analytical focus on gender, global sociodemographic inequalities, power asymmetries, and border- and mobility regimes, as well as the organization of transnational care, transnational fatherhood, ageing, family reunions and return. It also includes a variety of methodological approaches to transnational family research, ranging from ethnography, biographical research, and life-course methods, to multi-sited approaches and quantitative surveys. Investigating an emergent debate, it sheds new light on migratory fluxes, their common and specific determinants, the types of actors involved, and ways to empirically and methodologically approach them. This is a must-read reference for social scientists interested in family research, migration, and gender studies.
  • Okinawan Women's Stories of Migration From War Brides to Issei

    The phenomenon of “war brides” from Japan moving to the West has been quite widely discussed, but this book tells the stories of women whose lives followed a rather different path after they married foreign occupiers. During Okinawa’s Occupation by the Allies from 1945 to 1972, many Okinawan women met and had relationships with non-Western men who were stationed in Okinawa as soldiers and base employees. Most of these men were from the Philippines. Zulueta explores the journeys of these women to their husbands’ homeland, their acculturation to their adopted land, and their return to their native Okinawa in their late adult years. Utilizing a life-course approach, she examines how these women crafted their own identities as first-generation migrants or “Issei” in both the country of migration and their natal homeland, their re-integration to Okinawan society, and the role of religion in this regard, as well as their thoughts on end-of-life as returnees. This book will be of interest to scholars looking at gender and migration, cross-cultural marriages, ageing and migration, as well as those interested in East Asia, particularly Japan/Okinawa.

    This book considers the role of civilian workers on U.S. bases in Okinawa, Japan and how transnational movements within East Asia during the Occupation period brought foreign workers, mostly from the Philippines, to work on these bases. Decades later, in a seeming “reproduction of base labour”, returnees of both Okinawan and Philippine heritage began occupying jobs on base as United States of Japan (USFJ) employees. The book investigates the role that ethnicity, nationality, and capital play in the lives of these base employees, and at the same time examines how Japanese and Okinawan identity/ies are formed and challenged. It offers a valuable resource for those interested in Japan and Okinawa, U.S. military basing, migration, and mixed ethnicities.

    Human mobility has been a widely examined phenomenon in the social sciences, and in this increasingly globalized world migration continues to be of significant concern. Edited by Maruja M.B. Asis and Karen Anne S. Liao, the volume features 27 life stories of children of migrant and multicultural families in the three countries.     This edited volume presents the latest multidisciplinary research that delves into developments related to contemporary Okinawa (a.k.a Ryukyu Islands), and also engages with contemporary debates on American hegemony and Empire in a larger geographical context. Okinawa, long viewed as a marginalized territory in larger historical processes, has been characterized solely by the U.S. military presence in the islands, despite having embraced a multiplicity of social and cultural transformations since the end of the Pacific War.     This is an exploratory study that aims to examine the case of aging migrants in a multi-cultural society in Asia, through the cases of Filipino migrants in Malaysia. Earlier Filipino migrants to Malaysia have made the country their home, and many of them are approaching the age of retirement or have retired. This project aims, among other things, to examine issues related to aging such as social welfare, health, family relationships, perceptions of home, and end-of-life decision making.

    本研究は、米軍駐留という「占領空間」とのかかわりで、沖縄-フィリピン間移動を「フィリピン・ウチナーンチュ」に注目しながら解明することにある。さらに、本研究は沖縄-フィリピン間の人の移動を探求することを通じて、現代の移動・移民研究(国際社会学)に貢献するものである。本研究の対象は、フィリピン人と結婚した沖縄人女性帰還者(一世と呼ぶ)と彼女らの子(二世と呼ぶ)である。 2013年度には、2012年度の課題に基づき、新たな観点から本研究課題について分析を行った。「占領の空間」における移動・移民を、ライフ・コース・マイグレーションの観点から取り上げ、本研究にあらたな位相を加えることができた。具体的には、沖縄人女性の帰還者に関するライフ・コースと彼女らの移動との関係性を考察するため、現地で補充調査・参与観察等を行った。インタビューに基づいたデータ、集めた文献などに基づいて、彼女らの個々の人生における移動を社会、政治・経済、文化的構造との関連で分析することができた。この結果、沖縄戦、占領期、結婚と出産、フィリピンへの移動、沖縄への帰還、そして晩年と死、それぞれの出来事はどのようにこれらの女性の移動に影響を与えるのかを明らかにできたと考える。ライフ・コースにおいて、これらの女性の移動と「故郷」に関する意識は、言うまでもなく、自分の人生(ライフ)の出来事によって形成され、また再形成される。その一方で、晩年と死に関する決断には家族(特に彼女らの子供たち)の影響を受け、この段階では家族の役割は重要である。また、帰還者として、この一世たちは、自らの居場所を作り、沖縄(あるいは地元)への再統合を挑戦していた。ライフ・コースの観点から考察すると、彼女らの戦争と占領期の経験・移動・帰還などは、このような「居場所を作る」という行為として理解することができる。

    社会人・一般　笹川平和財団アジア事業グループでは、重点分野のひとつとして「包摂的な社会の実現」を掲げています。その一環として、保健医療や子供の教育の問題をはじめとする在日外国人が抱える様々な課題について、当事者コミュニティの果たす役割が大きいと考え、外国人コミュニティ内の相互扶助を強化するための活動を支援しています。 その取り組みの１つが、在日フィリピン人を支援するフィリピン人と日本人のグループ「架け橋」による『架け橋：日本で暮らす若者のガイド』制作です。架け橋はさらに、当事者による当事者支援のために、日本国内のフィリピン人グループとつながり、活動の発展を続けています。 今般、架け橋と共催し、日本国内の外国人住民が置かれている現状や多文化共生に係る多分野（保健、教育、雇用等）の政策・実践について、各地域の情報や経験を共有するシンポジウムを開催します。 本シンポジウムでは、フィリピンからの移住者の現状を知ることを通して、日本における多文化共生のさらなる推進を目指すことを目的としています。保健、教育、雇用といった移住者に影響を与える様々な分野の政策や実践について、各地域での情報や経験を共有し、現在移住者を支える活動を行っている組織・団体等が今後の活動における指針を得られるような場を目指します。 国際移住者デーとなるこの日に、みなさまのご参加をお待ちしております。
