  • Hierarchical domain decomposition with parallel mesh refinement for billions-of-DOF scale finite element analyses, Kohei Murotani, Shin Ichiro Sugimoto, Hiroshi Kawai, Shinobu Yoshimura, International Journal of Computational Methods, 11,   2014 01 01 , This paper describes a parallel fast generation method of large-scale meshes for a hierarchical domain decomposition method implemented in the open source parallel finite element software ADVENTURE. Since large-scale meshes need to be generated in order to perform various analyses in Japan's Petaflops Supercomputer, nicknamed the «K computer», a mesh refinement function and a communication table generation function without communication are newly developed and implemented for the hierarchical domain decomposition tool named ADVENTURE-Metis. The developed new version is named ADVENTURE-Metis Ver.2. Since a generation cost of a communication table for sending and receiving data among computational nodes becomes so expensive for the refined large-scale mesh, the present authors have newly developed a parallel algorithm such that the communication tables of vertices, edges and faces are updated each other during mesh refinement after the initial communication tables of vertices, edges and faces are generated for an initial mesh. As a result, the generation of a refined mesh model over billions degrees of freedom (DOFs) from an initial medium-size mesh model of about a million DOFs can be performed in a parallel computer in a short time. © 2014 World Scientific Publishing Company.

Published by Elsevier Ltd.We have been developing aneigenvalue analysis solver as a module of the ADVENTURE system; freely available computer aided engineering system for large-scale finite element analysis.In this paper, we introduce the preliminary development of sequentialeigenvalue analysis solver before parallelizing the solver. Thissequentialsolverhasasimple implementation of theinverse iteration method,and will be used for verificationofparallelsolver we plan to develop in next step.From the results of this solver, the influence of the assumption we will made for the next step parallel solver could be verified.

  • Fully automated mixed mode crack propagation analyses based on tetrahedral finite element and VCCM (virtual crack closure-integral method), Hiroshi Okada, Hiroshi Kawai, Takashi Tokuda, Yasuyoshi Fukui, International Journal of Fatigue, 50,   2013 01 01 , The authors have been developing a crack propagation analysis system that can deal with arbitrary shaped cracks in three-dimensional solids. The system is consisting of mesh generation software, a large-scale finite element analysis program and a fracture mechanics module. To evaluate the stress intensity factors, virtual crack closure-integral method (VCCM) for the quadratic tetrahedral finite element is adopted and is included in the fracture mechanics module. The rate and direction of crack propagation are predicted by using appropriate formulae based on the stress intensity factors. In this paper, the crack propagation system is briefly described and some numerical results are presented. © 2012 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

  • Computations of stress intensity factors for deep cracks in plates by using the tetrahedral finite element, Hiroshi Okada, Hirohito Koya, Hiroshi Kawai, Yinsheng Li, American Society of Mechanical Engineers, Pressure Vessels and Piping Division (Publication) PVP, 1,   2012 12 01 , In this paper, stress intensity factor solutions for deep half-elliptical cracks that are applicable to the structural integrity evaluations of welded structures are presented. Welded structures generally have some weld residual stresses resulting in stress corrosion crackings (SCCs). This paper describes a simple way to compute the stress intensity factors under the weld-residual stresses and the mode I stress intensity factor solutions for deep half-elliptical cracks. The residual stresses are set to vary proportional to the constant, the linear, the quadratic and the cubic functions of x which is the distance from the plate surface. Although we use a straightforward finite element method to perform the computations, we can quickly generate the stress intensity factor solutions as we make use of automatic mesh generation program for the tetrahedral finite element. Thus, it is very tractable to generate the finite element models with cracks. Furthermore, present solutions can be compared with those of Li et al. which are also presented in PVP 2012. We conclude that present method is useful for the evaluations of SIFs of cracks under the residual stresses. Copyright © 2012 by ASME.

  • Parallel BDD-based monolithic approach for acoustic fluid-structure interaction, Satsuki Minami, Hiroshi Kawai, Shinobu Yoshimura, Computational Mechanics, 50,   2012 08 20 , Parallel BDD-based monolithic algorithms for acoustic fluid-structure interaction problems are developed. In a previous study, two schemes, NN-I + CGC-FULL and NN-I + CGC-DIAG, have been proven to be efficient among several BDD-type schemes for one processor. Thus, the parallelization of these schemes is discussed in the present study. These BDD-type schemes consist of the operations of the Schur complement matrix-vector (Sv) product, Neumann-Neumann (NN) preconditioning, and the coarse problem. In the present study, the Sv product and NN preconditioning are parallelized for both schemes, and the parallel implementation of the solid and fluid parts of the coarse problem is considered for NN-I + CGC-DIAG. The results of numerical experiments indicate that both schemes exhibit performances that are almost as good as those of single solid and fluid analyses in the Sv product and NN preconditioning. Moreover, NN-I + CGC-DIAG appears to become more efficient as the problem size becomes large due to the parallel calculation of the coarse problem. © 2012 Springer-Verlag.

  • A monolithic approach based on the balancing domain decomposition method for acoustic fluid-structure interaction, S. Minami, H. Kawai, S. Yoshimura, Journal of Applied Mechanics, Transactions ASME, 79,   2012 01 01 , A scalable and efficient monolithic approach based on the Balancing Domain Decomposition (BDD) method for acoustic fluid-structure interaction problems is developed. The BDD method is a well-known domain decomposition method for non-overlapping sub-domains, which consists of Neumann-Neumann (NN) preconditioning and coarse grid correction. In this study, we derive four types of BDD method, considering two options for NN preconditioning (NN-I and NN-C) and two options for coarse grid correction (CGC-FULL and CGC-DIAG). From the results of numerical experiments, the combination of NN-I and CGC-FULL turns out to be the most efficient scheme, showing fast convergence property irrespective of the number of sub-domains, DOFs of fluid and solid domains, and the added-mass effect of fluid. The combination of NN-I and CGC-DIAG is also expected to be an efficient scheme in some situations in a parallel environment. © 2012 American Society of Mechanical Engineers.
  • Large-Scale Fracture Mechanics Analysis Using Partitioned Iterative Coupling Algorithm, 遊佐泰紀, 片岡俊二, 河合浩志, 吉村忍, 日本機械学会論文集 A編(Web), 78, (791) 966-975 (WEB ONLY) - 975,   2012 08 06 , To analyze large-scale fracture mechanics problems effectively, we apply the partitioned iterative coupling algorithm which has been successfully utilized for multi-physics coupling problems. In the algorithm, the analysis domain is first decomposed into two domains. The one domain contains a crack, while the other does not. The two domains are analyzed separately and alternately with assumed boundary conditions on the boundary between the two domains. By updating the assumed boundary conditions repeatedly, the converged solution is finally obtained. In crack propagation analyses, this coupling iteration is performed at each crack propagation step. In a numerical experiment of an edged crack tension plate model of 1.96 million degrees of freedom, stress intensity factors are computed 4.52 times faster than using a conventional finite element method. This is because, in the partitioned iterative coupling algorithm, the stiffness matrix on the domain far from the crack is constant through the whole crack propagation analysis. © 2012 The Japan Society of Mechanical Engineers.

Although three-dimensional finite element analyses have become a common tool in the industries to perform design analyses, there still exist many difficulties in performing threedimensional crack propagation analyses. That is because, although fully automatic mesh generation techniques are available for tetrahedral finite elements, hexahedral elements are commonly used in three-dimensional crack analyses. Furthermore, the analysis models tend to be large in their scales. The key components of present analysis system are the mesh generation software and virtual crack closure-integral method (VCCM) for the second-order tetrahedral finite element. VCCM is an energetic method to compute the stress intensity factors. In this paper, methodologies in automatic mesh generation for crack propagation analysis are described in detail and some numerical examples are presented.

The key components in the analysis system are a mesh generation software and the virtual crack closure-integral method (VCCM) for the second-order tetrahedral finite element to evaluate the crack parameters (the energy release rates and the stress intensity factors). Based on them, the software system was carefully designed to handle large scale analysis model. In this paper, as the first report, the outlines of the system and the finite element model procedures are described.

  • Finite element analysis of the stress and deformation fields around the blunting crack tip, Reza Miresmaeili, Masao Ogino, Ryuji Shioya, Hiroshi Kawai, Hiroshi Kanayama, Memoirs of the Faculty of Engineering, Kyushu University, 68,   2008 12 01 , The main object is to define the stress and deformation fields in a vicinity of a crack in an elasto-plastic power law hardening material under plane strain tensile loading. Hydrogen-enhanced localized plasticity (HELP) is recognized as an acceptable mechanism of hydrogen embrittlement and hydrogen-induced failure in materials. A possible way by which the HELP mechanism can bring about macroscopic material failure is through hydrogen-induced cracking. The distributions of the hydrostatic stress and plastic strain are simulated around the blunting hydrogen induced crack tip. The model of Sofronis and McMeeking is used in order to investigate the crack plasticity state. The approach is valid as long as small scale yielding conditions hold. Finite element analyses are employed to solve the boundary value problems of large strain elasto-plasticity in the vicinity of a blunting crack tip under mode I (tensile) plane-strain opening and small scale yielding conditions. Three different FEM softwares; MSC.Marc, ADVENTURE-Solid and ZeBuLoN are used for structural analysis and results are verified by the previous works. The aim is to compare the results of different rate equilibrium equations in the case of large deformation and large strain elasto-plastic analysis.

Recently, as a linear-elastic fracture parameter evaluation method, VCCM (Virtual Crack Closure-Integral Method) is extended for 3-D tetrahedral element. With fully automatic generation capability of tetrahedral mesh, more realistic crack propagation of a 3-D arbitrary curved geometry can be handled efficiently. Here, we developed a new mesh generation technique for 3-D crack propagation analysis. A crack propagation analysis of an elliptical crack in a mixed mode environment, which is initially flat and is gradually growing into a curved crack in 3-D space, is also demonstrated.

Using the Sofronis and McMeeking model, we reconstruct our own finite element scheme based on the Krom et al. scheme, and apply the Galerkin method in this first trial. The software is based on the conventional finite element method with second order tetrahedral element and an automatic mesh generation software. Hexahedral finite elements have historically been used in fracture analyses and methodologies to compute the crack parameters have been developed for the hexahedral elements. In present research, the authors have developed a VCCM (virtual crack closure-integral method) for the second order tetrahedral finite element. Use of the tetrahedral element allows us to utilize an automatic mesh generation software. The direction and rate of crack propagation are predicted based on the stress intensity factors and the shape of crack is updated. Hence, a software package containing the modules for mesh generation, for finite element analysis, for stress intensity factor evaluation, for predicting the rate and the direction of crack propagation and for updating crack configuration, can be developed.
  • Development of parallel CAE system for large scale problems based on computer network, Ryuji Shioya, Masao Ogino, Kei Fujino, Hiroshi Kanayama, Hiroshi Kawai, Advanced Materials Research, 33-37 PART 2,   2008 01 01 , We have been developing an advanced general-purpose computational mechanics system, named ADVENTURE, which is designed to be able to analyze a three dimensional finite element model of arbitrary shape over 100 million Degrees Of Freedom (DOF) mesh. The one of main process modules for solid analysis, named ADVENTURE_Solid, is based the hierarchical domain decomposition parallel algorithm and employs the balancing domain decomposition as a solution technique for linearized equations. The ADVENTURE_Solid has been successfully implemented on a single PC, PC clusters and MPPs with high parallel performances. Since the software has become a quite large system, it is not easy to install or operate the system on parallel machines by users. In this paper, to operate such a system from a client PC through the network, the Web-based CAE system is developed.
  • An e-learning system for CAE, Hiroshi Kawai, Akira Kuwata, Hirohisa Noguchi, Advanced Materials Research, 33-37 PART 2,   2008 01 01 , An e-learning system for computer-aided engineering is developed. The system is designed as a Web-based rich client (or rich Internet application, RIA), so that anybody can learn CAE skills from anywhere, anytime. Mesh generation, finite element analysis and visualization capabilities for a set of benchmark problems, such as cantilever beam and plate with hole, are implemented using FLASH ActionScript language. It is combined with a CAE educational program, dedicated for under-graduate students and novice engineers in mechanical and architectural industries.

Present VCCM formulation can handle arbitrary shaped three-dimensional cracks. In the evaluations of the energy release rates and the stress intensity factors, nodal force and displacement data that are the results of finite element computation are used. Present VCCM is quite simple to implement as a post-processing program for finite element softwares. In this paper, the formulation of present VCCM is described in detail and some numerical results are presented. The numerical results are in good agreement with the analytical solutions. Finally, as a demonstration, a problem of three-dimensionally curved crack is presented.

Present VCCM assumes the use of second order tetrahedral finite elements. The use of tetrahedral finite elements have became a sort of standard way in large scale three-dimensional finite element analyses, due to the recent advancement of automatic mesh generation software for tetrahedral elements. In this paper, theory, detailed procedures to evaluate the fracture parameters and the results of numerical analyses for mode I problems, are presented and the accuracy of proposed VCCM is critically reviewed.

  • Advanced general-purpose finite element solid analysis system adventure_solid on the earth simulator - Its application to full-scale analysis of nuclear pressure vessel, Ryuji Shioya, Masao Ogino, Hiroshi Kawai, Shinobu Yoshimura, American Society of Mechanical Engineers, Pressure Vessels and Piping Division (Publication) PVP, 482,   2004 11 17 , We have been developing an advanced general-purpose computational mechanics system, named ADVENTURE, which is designed to be able to analyze a model of arbitrary shape with a 10-100 million degrees of freedom (DOFs) mesh, and additionally to enable parametric and non-parametric shape optimization. Domain-decomposition-based parallel algorithms are implemented in preprocesses (domain decomposition), main processes (system matrix assembling and solutions) and post-process (visualization), respectively. Especially the hierarchical domain decomposition method with a preconditioned iterative solver (HDDM) is adopted in one of the main modules for solid analysis, named ADVENTURE_Solid. The employed preconditioner is the Balancing Domain Decomposition (BDD) type method. The ADVENTURE_Solid has been successfully implemented on a single PC, PC clusters and massively parallel processors such as Hitachi SR8000/MPP. In this study, this solid analysis module is implemented with minor modification on the Earth Simulator consisting of 256 nodes, i.e. 2,048 vector-type processing elements of theoretical peak performance of 16 TFLOPS (Tela FLoating point Operations Per Seconds), and succeeded in solving an elastostatic problem of a nuclear pressure vessel model of 100 million DOFs mesh in 8.5 minutes with 5.1 TFLOPS, which is 31.8 % of the peak performance and over 80% parallel efficiency. As the purpose of demonstration of virtual mock-up test, the ADVENTURE_Solid is applied to solve a precise model of the ABWR vessel subjected to two kinds of loading conditions, i.e. (1) quasi-static seismic loading and (2) hydrostatic internal pressure.

Once an analysis shape is defined, a small-scale mesh with uniform distribution of element sizes is created using an automatic mesh generation technique. The mesh is named here a virtual finite-element model and used only for the purpose of visualization. Then the mapping between the virtual FE model and the analysis shape and the mapping between the virtual FE model and an actual FE model are established. Analysis conditions and analysis results can be visualized using the virtual FE model interactively on any graphics hardware. We developed a postprocessor, and applied it to a large-scale heat conduction problem. It was demonstrated that this technique can provide a fully interactive visualization environment.

With a Newl Function for Three-Dimensional Adaptive Remeshing., 矢川元基, 吉村忍, 河合浩志, 日本機械学会論文集 A編, 61, (583) 652 - 659,   1995 03 , This paper describes a new adaptive remeshing technique for the three-dimensional finite element analysis based on the fuzzy knowledge processing and the computational geometry. First, a three dimensional geometry model is defined through some solid modelling operations, and analysis conditions are attached on each part of the model. A tetrahedral finite element model is generated following an initial density distribution of nodes specified by a user. After its analysis is finished, a posteriori error estimation is performed. An optimal density distribution of nodes is estimated, and a new finite element model is created. These procedures are iterated fully automatically until solution accuracy satisfies the criterion specified by a user. The error estimation method proposed by Zienkiewicz and Zhu (Z-Z estimator) is applied to the system, and its practical performances are demonstrated through its application to some static heat conduction problems of three-dimensional complex geometry. © 1995, The Japan Society of Mechanical Engineers. Some numerical algorithms such as the Selective Reduced Integration/Penalty Function (SRI/PF) method have been developed and utlized to calculate various two-dimensional fully plastic solutions. However, only a few three-dimensional solutions have been obtained because of their numerical instability caused by the interaction among crack-tip singularity, material nonlinearity and incompressibility. This paper describes a new finite element algorithm for three-dimensional fully plastic solutions. The algorithm is basically classified into the mixed formulations. By introducing an artificial viscosity term to the governing equations, static crack problems are converted into quasi-nonsteady ones, which are solved using the fractional step method. The conversion makes the algorithm stable even in the analyses of complex crack geometries though it would need a number of iterations. In the analyses, mixed interpolation tetrahedral elements are also employed from a viewpoint of high quality mesh generation for three-dimensional cracked geometries. Numerical accuracy of the present algorithm is clearly demonstrated through the analyses of the three-dimensional fully plastic solutions of center cracked plates. © 1994 Springer-Verlag.
