Recently, in addition to physical and skill training, mental training for athletes is increasingly important. Mental training encourages athletes to acquire psychological skills such as relaxation and emotional control with the purpose of demonstrating their abilities in competition settings. In particular, psychological tests to measure psychological characteristics are necessary for grasping the psychological state of individual athletes and verifying the effectiveness of training. However, psychological tests on a regular basis can be a burden for athletes. In addition, there is also a problem that the management and feedback of psychological data by questionnaires is burdensome for mental trainers in cases where subjects are a large group, such as a sports team. Therefore, this study developed an application that visualizes athletes' psychological data gathered through web questionnaires. In addition, we conducted an interview on the developed applications for coaches and athletes belonging to the sports team. Based on the results of interviews, the methods of psychological tests and feedback from the test results considering the competitors were discussed.

  • Changes of Mental and Physical states through Plyometric training:-Using Motion Capture System-, YOSHINUMA Satoshi, KATO Chieko, AOKI Kouichirou, The Proceedings of the Symposium on sports and human dynamics, 2017, (0) C - 6,   2017 ,

Plyometric training is training aimed at improving muscle power to exert muscular strength under high speed. This training may be expected to raise performance specific to the competition through jumping actions and the like. However, in order to prevent injuries in plyometric training and improve the effectiveness of the training, it is indispensable to acquire appropriate exercise techniques. Therefore, in this research, the athlete who was instructed using plyometric training focused on the process of mastering exercise technique, and carried out performance measurement and analysis during training. First of all, 10 college student athletes participating in the experiment were given explanations about plyometric training exercises (Tiff ankle hop, jump to box, side to side push off), and asked to perform each exercise 10 times. Participants were asked to wear a suit with motion sensors fixed at all 10 body parts, and the rotation angle of each sensor was measured using motion capture. Next, the participants were asked to watch a 12-minute video recording the state of the expert's guidance on the plyometric training. After that, we exercised using plyometric training again, and similarly we measured motion using motion capture. After the experiment, we conducted an interview survey with each participant and asked about performance changes and the strengths and weaknesses of each exercise. When the measured rotation angle was compared before and after the video, a significant difference was observed in the rotation angle of the motion sensors attached to the shoulder, chest, and both feet according to the exercise. Based on the result of motion measurement and the answers obtained from the interview survey, we examined the effects of training guidance on athlete performance.

The importance of psychological measurement and evaluation has been growing, such as stress evaluation, product evaluation and design, and mental training in various scenes of our life. A questionnaire survey is generally conducted as a quantitative measurement method for psychological data, and this data is useful to understand the general mental states of a person. In contrast, an interview survey is also essential for clarifying aspects of an individual's mental state in detail. However, it is difficult for experts and people who are not experts to share the understanding of the interview results, meaning the mental state, because interpretation of these results requires advanced skills. Therefore, the society for visualization of mind was inaugurated last October in order to create an easy to understand visualization of an individual's mental state. This paper introduces the society's effort to visualize the mind using an interdisciplinary approach based on psychology, information science, and fluid dynamics.

  • Development of Design Methods for Yoga Wear, KATO Chieko, SUGAHARA Toru, DOHI Masako, AOKI Koichiro, YOSHINUMA Satoshi, ANDO Keisuke, Goto Fumiko, The Proceedings of the Symposium on sports and human dynamics, 2016, (0) B - 13,   2016 ,

This study carried out an evaluation experiment of yoga wear on eight adult males in order to clarify required performance of yoga wear for males. The participants were asked to wear three kinds of yoga wear, selected from the products of popular yoga wear brands, and do a 15-minute yoga program three times, including yoga poses and exercises. An investigator conducted an interview survey with each participant using the evaluation grid method after he finished the programs wearing all kinds of yoga wear. At first, the investigator asked the participant to rank three kinds of yoga wear according to preference, and questioned each subject about differences between them. As a result, six evaluation items of yoga wear were acquired from their answers. After that, the investigator extracted both generic concepts and more specific concepts from the evaluation items by laddering. The evaluation structure of yoga wear was created by illustrating the relationship between all the evaluation items extracted from the interviews with the participants. In addition, fuzzy cluster analysis about the participants was carried out based on frequencies of their usages of keywords (Sense of pressure, Shape around the neck, Tactile properties, Elasticity, Presence of stitches or tags, Permiability) about the six evaluation items during interviews. The eight participants were classified into three clusters (small build, standard build, large build) according to their body type. The analysis results of data from these interviews showed that the required performance of yoga wear was mainly "not to be conscious of wearing them," "not being painful wearing them" and "being easy to move while wearing them." The designing of yoga wear with focus on the sense of pressure, elasticity, and shape around the neck of the clothing was required to realize this performance. Moreover, it is necessary to consider the tactile properties of clothes and the presence of stitches or tags on them for designing yoga wear, depending on the shape and needs of each individual body.

  • Mental and physical changes in athletes through yoga, AOKI Koichiro, HATACHI Takeru, YOSHINUMA Satoshi, ANDO Keisuke, KATO Chieko, The Proceedings of the Symposium on sports and human dynamics, 2016, (0) C - 35,   2016 ,

This study conducted an experiment on 18 university rugby players in order to verify the effects of yoga on mental and physical aspects of athletes. Nine participants were assigned to the yoga group, in which they took part in yoga in a laboratory for about 30 minutes, while the others were assigned to the control group, in which they stretched in the same way. Range of motion(ROM) of each participant was measured as an index of flexibility before and after yoga or stretching exercises. Their ROM of hip and knee joints were calculated by measuring their change of angles using a motion capture system when the participants were holding the pose of "putting one's knees on one's chests" and "the Garland Pose," both of which belong to Asana yoga. In addition, five participants in the yoga group continued practicing yoga for about an hour once a week for two months. After that, an interview survey on them was conducted to clarify the effect of yoga on the athletes' mind, body, competition and training. The results of the experiment showed that the participants' ROM of hip and knee joints increased significantly only after experiencing yoga. On the other hand, the results of the interview indicated that the participants' awareness of their bodies increased through yoga, which may improve their concentration, and they felt improvement of their flexibility as well. From these results, it may be concluded that yoga is beneficial as a mental and physical training method for athletes.

  • An Application of 3D Spiral Visualization to the Psychological Data, Heliang ZHUANG, KATO Chieko, TSUCHIDA Kensei, Journal of the Visualization Society of Japan, 34, (133) 2 - 7,   2014 , The purpose of this study is to visualize large and complex psychological data to render it more easily understood. We have developed, and have been enhancing a web counseling system. During development, counselors need to grasp the user's situation and formulate psychological data. However, the data are highly varied, and it is very difficult to compare among them, as well as to extract features from them. To cope with these problems, it is useful and helpful to visualize data. Thus, we propose visualizing the psychological data to 3D graph. The 3D display is implemented in a spiral shape using the Processing project. In this study, our 3D spiral display was used to visualize users' data from the web counseling system, and the data from the personality test (GHQ28, S-H Resilience and Uchida-Kraepelin Test) .

This technology has made it easier to carry out analysis of large volumes of text - such as lexical analysis - using software as a tool. As a result, one finds computer-driven quantitative analyses of texts in a variety of fields. Among these may be found studies in which these methods have been applied to the analysis of literary texts, as well. Literary works, however, inevitably contain an element of fuzziness. Therefore, the aim of this study is to apply the methods of ...

  • GUI for Online Counseling System, 後藤 隆彰, 加藤 千恵子, 土田 賢省, Journal of the Visualization Society of Japan, 30, (117) 2 - 2,   2010 , The Annual Report of Statistics on Japanese Nationals Overseas published by the Foreign Ministry says that the number of Japanese who live abroad exceeds more than one million. On the other hand, with the increasing numbers of Japanese living overseas, a correspondent increase in the number of suicides has also been observed. In fact, the number of suicides exceeds the number of traffic-related fatalities. And yet, no mechanism for counseling Japanese living overseas has been established. The need for counseling for Japanese living overseas is growing, and the development of a counseling system that can be accessed through the Internet is particularly desirable. We have carried out collaborative research with a clinic regarding this online counseling system. In this paper, we report the analysis of a questionnaire for GUI for online counseling system, including factors such as usability, design, satisfaction and so on. Moreover we show an online counseling system overview that is obtained after applying the results of a questionnaire for the prototype system. (165word)
  • Drawing Test on Web Counseling System, 塩野 康徳, 加藤 千恵子, 土田 賢省, Journal of the Visualization Society of Japan, 30, (117) 8 - 8,   2010 , The risk of suffering mental health problems is high due to problems such as working away from home, language barriers, differences in culture, human relationships, and medical facilities. Therefore, we have developed an online counseling system to help treat mental health problems. This system prevents mental health problems from worsening due to negligence when they first appear. Online counseling using computers has important advantages, such as counseling without the limitations of time and space. The purpose of this wok is to progress from a drawing test to actual counseling via the internet. The focus in this paper is the drawing test. We explain the drawing test system for the Baum Test, which is a projective method using computers. Examinees draw by combining parts on the screen. Counselors conjecture mental states through visualization of the drawing process and the picture. It thus becomes possible to offer better care for the human heart by adding a drawing test system to the online counseling system.

As a result, it is clarified the followings. State transition, e.g., melting an ice to water, of all the non-life-bearing targets exhibits 1/f fluctuation frequency characteristics. Namely, all the non-life-bearing materials exhibit 1/f fluctuations when changing their state aspect such as solid, liquid and gas. On the other side, 1/f fluctuations can be observed the creative works, e.g., artistic paints when transitioning mental situation from depression to mania of life-bearing target, i.e., his or her. In the other words, a life-bearing target typically human exhibits 1/f fluctuation characteristics via his own creative work when changing his mental situation..

Each of the Red, Green and Blue component intensities is extracted in terms of intensity histogram from each of pictures. These Red, Green and Blue components histograms are called RGB Eigen patterns. After arranging the RGB Eigen patters in time sequentially, we apply Discrete Fourier transform to them. Thus, obtained Fourier spectrum characteristics are represented in terms of power series approximation. As a result, we have succeeded in extracting the 1/f frequency fluctuation from the Vincent van Gogh's works.

As an initial example, we applied our methodology to several images drawn by the maladjusted person in a state of excessive adjustment. As a result, we succeeded in extracting and visualizing the l/f components. Thus, it is revealed our methodology proposed here has turned out to be very promising one.

The wavelet multi-resolution analysis is capable of extracting and discussing the detailed information of various levels on the marriage and vocation views. Examination of each of the multi-resolution levels suggests that they experience a transition period, which is found in not only marriage but also vocation viewpoints. Furthermore, It is clarified that the vocation view of tradition and non-tradition mixture is similar to that of tradition one.

In the current study, the consistency of the subjects' views for each category was verified. The consistency of the subjects was examined by means of wavelet multi-resolution analysis. As a result regardless of difference between traditional and non-traditional ways of thinking, it is clear that the subjects' views are inconsistent in both conservatism and progressivism. Furthermore, it is evident that young Japanese men who have both of traditional and non-traditional views are similar in thinking to those with traditional views in regard to vocation.

Pictures of a child's two different facial expressions, normal and smiling, were transformed separately for each color component. The data from this transformation was analyzed, to find differences between normal faces and smiling faces, which were commonly observed in the convolution of the three colors. RGB convolution could show slight differences in facial information that the monochrome data could not reveal This method has considerable potential for extracting slight facial information of autistic children.

Because of the difficulties fixing the face location at a particular coordinate, an extraction of the facial change from the comfortable to uncomfortable is relatively difficult task for a computerized approach. To overcome this difficulty, we propose a method, which combines the Fourier with wavelets approaches. After, a global facial change is extracted by the Fourier transform; application of the multi-resolution analysis of wavelets makes it possible to extract the local facial changes.
  • Facial Information Extraction by means of the Fourier-Wavelets transforms:Psychological Data Processing, Kato Chieko, Iwasaki Harumi, Saito Yoshifuru, Hanta Susumu, Horii Kiyoshi, Journal of the Visualization Society of Japan, 19, (1) 207 - 208,   1999 , Surface information has been extracted by means of the Fourier -wavelets transforms. The method is composed of the three major steps, the first is to extract the global difference between the two faces by Fourier analysis. The second step is that wavelets transform is applied to the data obtained by the first step in order to extract the local difference. Finally, a set of multi-resolution results of the wavelet transform gives the Fourier-wavelets extracted results. Even if a limited number of cases, we have succeeded in obtaining the new information in addition to the conventional results.
