    竹本は、戦後日本において、東京日本語学校をはじめとして宣教師の日本語学校の設立に重要な働きをしたのは、FMCNA六人委員会の委員、そして内外協力会（CoC）やIBCの現地委員会のセクレタリーを担ったダーリー・ダウンズであったこと、戦前の日語文化学校の校長であり、戦後の日本にFMCNAの宣教活動の方針を日本の状況と調整しながら日本語学校を再興していったことなどから、日米双方の資料からダウンズの意図を明らかにした。 田中は、京都大学大学文書館に預けられている有賀鐵太郎の資料より、敗戦以後、約１年半の活動について、戦後同志社、アメリカ公人との関係、他校とのつながり、プロテスタント界、日常（文筆・講演・農村活動）、他宗教との親交などの視点から分析した。 高橋は、第二次世界大戦前の日系二世の越境教育（日本留学）や仏教青年会運動の展開において、中心的な役割を果たした常光浩然の戦後の諸活動のうち、とくに国際的な平和運動および仏教振興運動への関与について考察を行った。 吉田は、アメリカプロテスタントによる戦時下日系アメリカ人再定住・統合活動と戦後期日本プロテスタント再建活動との影響関係について、「自主性」を鍵として、アメリカプロテスタントは戦後の反人種主義・反帝国主義実践として、脱パターナリズム、被伝道者の人権・自主性の最重要視、公平・公正性の保障、民主主義の徹底、協力推進という日系人の統合事業が提起した課題を日本伝道再開という具体的な実践の中でどのように克服したのかについて、日米双方の資料から、1945年～1947年の実態について解明した。 物部は、太平洋戦争中、ハワイ日本人捕虜収容所の所長として活躍した、同志社大学教授オーテス・ケーリの活動や思想について、主に戦前、戦中の経験に焦点を当てることにより、それらが、太平洋戦争期を通じ、どのような連続性をもっていたかについて考察を行った。

    2021年度は、2020年に実施した調査データについて「墓参」や「神棚所持」「仏壇所持」等、各研究メンバーがそれぞれの分担に基づいて分析した研究会をくり返し実施するとともに、呪術研究およびスピリチュアリティ研究に関する現在の動向について研究会を実施し、研究のとりまとめに向けてプロジェクトの分析視角について討議した。 一例として墓参について見れば、それが供養とは異なる意味をもち、現世利益的な祈願の機会であることが確認される。現代、代行サービスを利用してでも墓参を欠かすまいとする心性や、伝統的な墓参の時期としての盆や彼岸についてネットで調べられている状況は、墓参が伝統として継続される一方で、内実が変容している様子を示唆する。墓参は教団との関わりで習慣づけられているものではなく、「伝統」として観念されている行為をくり返すことで家族やメディアなどの影響を受けつつ習慣化した文化的実践と言える。 墓参での祈願について、2006年に本研究会が行った調査結果と2020年の調査結果とを経年比較してみると、世代ごとの祈願行為は14年間で減少する傾向にある（加齢効果の点では祈願減少）のに対して、2006年と2020年の同一年代を比較した場合には祈願行為が増加する傾向を確認できた（時代効果の点では祈願増加）。この結果から、時代を超えて伝統的になされているかに見える墓参での祈願行為が、各自年を経ると実施されなくなる一方で、時代によって増減する実態を窺うことができる。 墓参の実践は、日常から区別される非日常世界に現世利益という日常の思いを持ち込みながら、日常と非日常とを融合させる場を構成している。一定の共同性において形成された「伝統」として観念され実践される行為が周期的に反復されることで、それが不変的で安定して継承されているように見える秩序化について、その内的構造の一端を解明した。

    This study clarifies the following aspects of religious movements created by Brazilian diaspora. 1). Development of Congregacion Cristiana in Spain and Japan, which was originally formed in Brazil. 2). Social background of its followers’ adaptation to societies in Spain and Japan. 3). Transnationality observed in their migration. 4). Identity issue of the followers as 1.5 generation immigrants. 5). Development of Assembleia de Deus and Brazilian Catholic Church in Spain. 6). Preliminary research on the circumstances of Brazilian religious communities in England. In addition, this study collects and analyzes literal materials regarding the relationship between migration/refugee and religion in Europe and focuses the influence of foreign religions brought by immigrants on existing religions at host societies.

    The purpose of this project is to empirically clarify how religious organizations are responding to the increasing number of immigrants in contemporary Japan from the perspective of multicultural coexistence. The main targets of the survey are religious organizations, such as Christian and Islamic organizations, that serve as bases for immigrants. In addition to this, by surveying associations for the purpose of international exchange, we were able to grasp the actual state of relations between civil society and faith-based immigrant groups. As a result of this research, we were able to confirm that a certain degree of multicultural coexistence has been achieved within religious organizations, but that there are many issues to be addressed in realizing multicultural coexistence outside of religious organizations. The greatest achievement of this research was the publication of a book entitled "Religion and Multicultural Coexistence. in Contemporary Japan.

    The purpose of this study is to demonstrate how Japanese Americans developed the eduational works among their compatriots who were not relocated in Hawaii and the U.S. during World War II.This study particularly focused on both geographical and religious differences.Fist of all, These Japanese Americans lived in Hawaii, Chicago, New York, and even Internment Camp concentrated in Americanizing those compatriots for their ethnic survival. In other words, they did not attempt to assimilate to the larger society. Second, their activities had autonomous, independent-minded characters so that they aggressively proved themselves as American citizens. Third, they took advantaged of Americanization works to continue and develop their ethnic community and culture (including religion). Finally, those who lived in Chicago and New York pursuited the trans-generational, trans-racial activities.

    In this collaborative research, we set up 20 opportunities to discuss the actual state of knowledge about religion and nationalism in modern Japan, and gathered researchers in various research fields and laid the foundation for "interdisciplinary arena." In the course of exploring the "national philosophy" in modern Japanese society and considering a group of problems in which "Shinto" and "Kokutai" Theory interlace, through the accumulation and comprehensive comparison of individual concrete empirical historical research,the importance of finding out its generality and specialty carefully and its strategic effectiveness were confirmed.

    This study investigated the roles of Japanese religious groups which engaged in support activities for Indochinese refugees, particularly Vietnamese refugees in Japan. In Japanese society, the religious groups were mainly non-governmental actors in support activities for the refugees. Both the Catholic Church, which was a minority religious group in Vietnam where Buddhism was the dominant religion, and Japanese Buddhist groups participated in them because of humanitarian and religious reasons. Moreover, while Vietnamese Buddhists have rarely developed their community in Japan, the Catholic churches have played important roles in constructing Vietnamese ethnic communities and mutual aids between Vietnamese residents in various parts of Japan which had comparatively large Vietnamese populations. This study also points out that churches are places where Vietnamese residents have communicated with technical interns or students who recently came to Japan from Vietnam.

    Since 1980s, the population of immigrants has increased. Many newcomers have had various difficulties in their daily lives on account of a lack of public supports by central and local governments in Japan. On the other hand Catholic Churches have supported them. Although the collaboration between government sectors and Catholic Churches seem to be effective to aid troubled foreign residents, the direct collaboration between them is legally restricted under the principle of rigid separation of politics (government) and religion. The points revealed in our research are as follows. First, the Catholic Churches have important significance as bases for Japanese and immigrants to contact on a daily life. Secondly, the supports of the Catholic Churches are substantial in large cities with many immigrants. Meanwhile, in local cities with few immigrants, the manpower of the Catholic Church is small and can only play a peripheral role.

    In this study, I explored the relationship between Newcomers (immigrants) and religious organizations in contemporary Japan, a topic on which very few studies have been conducted to date. I focused on two types of social support offered to foreign residents by religious organizations in various districts of the country: (1) Social Support from the Catholic Church for Latin American residents; and (2) Support Projects by the Catholic Church and by Rissho Kosei-Kai for Indochinese refugees. The results revealed how humanitarian aid, based on religious motivations has not only developed rapidly and widely in each district in order to bolster public support for foreign residents but also played a role in establishing multicultural coexistence in each community.

    Through this research, many results, which were based on the results of discussions across the study area, have been made public on various issues related to religions and nationalism in modern Japan and "State Shinto" theory. Over the period of this study, 9 journal articles, 7 books (1 single author, 4 co-author, 2 sharing writing) as well as the final report of this research have been published by research organization members. The planned final report of this research is composed of eight articles by the members and covers the results of the entire study period.     採用3年度目である本年度は、学会発表および投稿論文の執筆と、博士論文執筆のための調査の実施をおもな研究活動とした。そして、実際に博士論文の執筆を開始した。 学会発表としては、日本宗教学会第65回学術大会(2006年9月17日於東北大学)において、「ハワイ日系移民社会における日系新宗教の展開-20世紀前半における天理教の展開を事例に-」という題目で研究発表を行った。また、日本移民学会が開催したワークショップ(8月5日於津田塾大学)において、「日系コミュニティと世代をめぐる研究動向」という題目で、近年の移民研究の動向についての発表を行った。そのほか、各種研究会においても、研究発表やコメンテーターを行った。 雑誌論文としては、単著で「第二次世界大戦後のハワイ日系仏教のアメリカ化とエスニック化」(『一橋研究』第31巻第3号、2006年)を発表した。 国内における調査としては、2006年4月に奈良県天理市内にある天理教関連施設を見学したうえで、ハワイを中心とした天理教の海外布教についての文献調査および教団関係者へのインタビュー調査を実施した。そして、2007年2-3月には、アメリカ合衆国ハワイ州ホノルル市において、ハワイにおける日系宗教教団、特に天理教およびハワイ本派本願寺教団のハワイ布教の歴史について、ハワイ大学付属図書館や各教団の関連教会・寺院において文献調査およびインタビュー調査を行った。 また、本研究課題を進めていくのに必要な図書や資料を複写および購入したほか、インタビュー調査における音声記録のために用いるICレコーダーや、これまで蓄積してきた研究資料を保存するための外付ハードディスクを購入した。
