Profile

  • Fuyuki Makino is in charge of research and education as a professor at Toyo University. He is a part-time lecturer on cultural theory at Ochanomizu University. He is also a part-time lecturer at Art and Architecture School of Waseda University, including cultural anthropology and architectural design.


    After graduating from Faculty of Science and Engineering at Waseda University, he earned his master's degree (International Relations) from Graduate School of Asia Pacific Studies at Waseda University. After that, he went to Daiwa Institute of Research and studied abroad in the doctoral program at the Laboratory of Folklore, Department of Philosophy, University of Zurich. He graduated from Art and Architecture School of Waseda University, and he received a Ph.D. from Waseda University. After that, he worked as a research associate and an assistant professor at Waseda University, an associate professor at Komazawa Women's University, and an associate professor at Art and Architecture School of Waseda University before assuming his current position. He is a registered first-class architect in Japan.


    His areas of expertise are cultural anthropology (urbanization / development assistance and housing supply in developing countries: Philippines), human geography (negative heritage and community memorial site: Cambodia), and architectural design (housing design and residence for urban immigrants: Mexico), immigration research (History of Japanese immigrants' nostalgia and roots exploration: Mexico), architectural planning (housing plans for urban poor areas: Cambodia). Major publications include "Evolution and Diversity of Megacity" (Tokyo University Press, 2016), "Architectural Anthropology" (Shumpusha Publishing, 2017), "Space of Symbiosis with Cambodia: Memorial, Negative Heritage, Community" (Shumpusha Publishing, 2020), "My Academic Books" (Shumpusha Publishing, 2022), "Designing Social Architecture" (Lexington Books, 2022), etc.

    本研究の初年度にあたる2021年度における研究実績は、以下の通りである。2021年度は、研究の初年度として、墨米移民（経済・娯楽的紐帯）に関わるフィールドワークを実施予定であったが、2020年2月より世界的に蔓延したコロナウイルスの影響が引き続き2021年度にも大きな影響を与えており、残念ながら全ての渡航について断念せざるを得なかった。そのため、2021年度に関しては、フィールド調査ができず、関連する文献の読み込みと整理を実施した。また、メキシコの研究機関における研究協力者とZOOMによる打ち合わせも実施した。各課題に関する具体的な研究実績は、以下の通りである。 １）「宗教行事を軸にした社会空間のシンボル性の脆弱化と経済・娯楽的紐帯の台頭のプロセス」においては、メキシコから米国の移民に関する文献の中で、どういった社会空間が研究の対象とされているのかについて整理した。宗教空間だけでなく、商業空間に関する調査についても把握できた。 ２）「再解釈されたメキシコ観の「可視的空間への表出・あふれだし」の混在性と実態」においては、実際のフィールドワークによる現地の確認ができないため、墨米移民の生活空間について言及している文献を整理した。 ３）「若年墨米移民が故郷と共同で構築する「経済・娯楽型社会空間」の理論的枠組みの提示」については、上記の文献調査から理論化に向けた課題を確認できた。 本研究の目的は、現在的な側面を踏まえた長期の社会空間・生活空間の変容を捉え、若年墨米移民が故郷と共同で構築する「経済・娯楽型社会空間」の理論的な枠組みを提示することにある。こうした研究目的を精査しながら、本年度は資料調査を行った。

    本研究の3年目にあたる2020年度における研究実績は、以下の通りである。 2020年度は、研究の最終年度として墨米移民に関わるフィールドワークを実施予定であったが、2020年2月より世界的に蔓延したコロナウイルスの影響で、全ての渡航について断念せざるを得なかった。そのため、2020年度に関しては、2018-2019年度の収集した文献や、インタビュー資料についての整理と分析の作業を行った。具体的には以下の通りである。 １）「米国在住移民の複数世代間における「伝統の継承」と米国における想像的伝統の変容」においては、メキシコシティーに居住する複数世帯、単身世帯へのインタビュー調査結果を整理した。そこでは、出稼ぎの時期や世代により発生する伝統継承の差異を確認することができた。２）「継承された伝統の発露としての墨コミュニティにおける文化実践と居住空間の構築」においては、実際の移民家族の居住スペースおよび社会空間を確認した。また、メキシコの故郷の伝統の発露の場としての具体的空間について考察した。３）「メキシコ地方都市の伝統的景観と米国の墨コミュニティの比較と共創的社会景観の提示」については、上記の資料を再度精査することで、理論化の道筋について確認できた。 本研究の目的は、これまでのキリスト教を軸とした宗教的な伝統儀礼が米国の社会空間を変容させている現状の中で、墨米移民と故郷の住民の両者の役割を組み入れた「共創的社会景観」を提示することにあった。本年度は、こうした目的を踏まえた上で資料精査を行った。

    本研究の最終年度にあたる2018年度の研究実績は、以下の通りである。 2018年度は、2017－2018年度に実施した「負の出来事」に関するフィールドワーク調査、文献調査に関わる研究成果をまとめ、「共通の当事者性」の理論化に努めた。本年度のフィールドワークでは、農村のコミュニティや家族内部で公にされずに密かに引き継がれてきたローカルな慰霊空間についてインタビュー調査した。主な調査地域は、プノンペン特別区、スバイ・リエン州の複数の農村地域である。農村に存在する負の出来事を想起させる場所（小規模キリング・フィールド等）の多くは日常生活の中に埋もれており、負の場所と記憶は断絶に向かっている。そのため、空間調査においては、コミュニティー・リーダーや僧侶・アチャー等から情報を得た。また、農村の仏教寺院では、被害者の慰霊ストゥーパの空間的特徴の把握を行った。慰霊の儀式の調査では、ローカルな慰霊空間を通して住民にどのように負の出来事が認識され、語られているのかについて把握した。こうしたフィールド調査から、「共通の当事者性」を育む空間性と宗教儀礼プロセスを把握できた。 また、仏教儀礼の中では被害者と加害者が明示的に区分けされない一方で、政治的な意味合いの強い慰霊式典では加害者が強く非難される。こうした対象的な場面性を、本研究で進行している「共通の当事者性」の形成プロセスと繋げる必要性を認識できた。また、研究成果を広く公表するため、海外論文誌への投稿に向けて準備を進めている。

    In this study, it was revealed that the landscape change in Mexico's regional cities is not under the unilateral influence of people, goods and money from global cities, such as remittance of immigrants and housing construction. The important point is the ties with the hometown. Both immigrants and locals have a major impact on the reproduction of traditions (Centro, Hacienda and Suburbs) in Mexican regional cities. The View of Dwelling in Travel is unique to Mexico, which creates its own social and real spaces while frequently moving through the dwellings.

    This study focused on the three main themes, "the migrants' life styles with continuous movements involved with return visits to their hometown", "construction of the migrants' houses and transformation of the cities" and "theorization and consideration of Migration City". I carried out the anthropological fieldwork and architectural investigation about migrants' houses in Jalostotitlan, Jalisco, Mexico, and examined the relationship between the migrants' return visits and urban transformation of sending societies. I clarified the concept of "travel-like dwelling" of Mexican-U.S. Migrants that is represented by their frequent and continuous return to their hometown.

    In this study, I carried out the anthropological fieldwork on the three main topics, "urban poor and their living spaces", "plural sense of belongings and 'placeness'", and "theory and practice of the common frameworks". I suggested the methodology to analyze human relationships formed in the space with adjacency and examined the face to face relationships among the residents in the shared places in the poor areas in Metro Manila. This study also considered the spatial model as a common framework that makes mutual criticism with the residents possible.
