Dr. Shima is an associate professor in urban and regional planning at Department of Regional Development Studies, Toyo University, Japan. Received Ph.D. from the University of Tokyo (Department of Urban Engineering), and awarded excellent dissertation award by City Planning Institute of Japan (CPIJ). He has rich research experience in over 30 Asian and African cities, together with local universities and NGOs, and published over 150 papers and books.
As an urban specialist, he joined United Nations University Institute of Advanced Studies (UNU-IAS) and worked as a consultant at UN-HABITAT and Asian Development Bank. He has also advised to Japan's central government such as Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism (MLIT), Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) as well as to the local government such as Koshigaya City. Recently he is engaged in community based tourism at a mountainous village of Vietnam under JICA's support.
