Various rear-earth doped SrAl_2O_4:Eu,Ln and CaAl_2O_4:Eu,Ln crystals have been grown by floating zone technique. Temperature dependence of photoluminescence lifetime and afterglow intensity from SrAl_2O_4 :Eu,Ln and CaAl_2O_4:Eu,Ln crystals are evaluated for the fiber-optic thermometer application. The lifetime of SrAl_2O_4:Eu, Dy and CaAl_2O_4:Eu,Dy crystal greatly vary with temperature. Lifetimes and temperature coefficients of the SrAl_2O_4:Eu,Dy (222 μs/K) and CaAl_2O_4:Eu,Dy (-169 μs/K) crystal were over 10 times larger than that of the ruby crystals (-10 μs/K).
