    Phosphor crystals used as sensors for fluorescence thermometer application have been grown and evaluated based on temperature dependence of fluorescence intensity. Peak intensity ratio of photoluminescence from Cr doped YAG, Spinel and other phosphor crystals are discussed based on thermal excitation energies of emission.

    Rare-earth garnet, Y_3Al_5O_<12>, doped with Cr_2O_3, crystals are found to be useful as a sensor material for a fiber-optic fluorescence thermometer. Temporal characteristics of fluorescence from Cr doped Y_3Al_5O_<12> crystals are quite comparable to that of ruby (Cr doped Al_2O_3) crystal.

    Cr doped YAlO_3 phosphor crystals have been grown and characterized for the applications in the fiber-optic thermometer based on temperature dependence of photoluminescence (PL) lifetime. Photoluminescence peaking at λ=735nm observed using green LED at λ=520 nm. Extremely long photoluminescence lifetime (τ=43.14 ms) is observed from Cr:YAlO_3 crystals. Temperature coefficient (-0.075ms/K) of Cr:YAlO_3 is also larger than those of ruby (-0.010ms/K) and spinel (-0.037ms/K). YAlO_3 is, therefore, considered to be a useful phosphor material for the fiber-optic thermometers.

    Various rear-earth doped SrAl_2O_4:Eu,Ln and CaAl_2O_4:Eu,Ln crystals have been grown by floating zone technique. Temperature dependence of photoluminescence lifetime and afterglow intensity from SrAl_2O_4 :Eu,Ln and CaAl_2O_4:Eu,Ln crystals are evaluated for the fiber-optic thermometer application. The lifetime of SrAl_2O_4:Eu, Dy and CaAl_2O_4:Eu,Dy crystal greatly vary with temperature. Lifetimes and temperature coefficients of the SrAl_2O_4:Eu,Dy (222 μs/K) and CaAl_2O_4:Eu,Dy (-169 μs/K) crystal were over 10 times larger than that of the ruby crystals (-10 μs/K).

    Abstract: The fiber-optic thermometer probe using chromium doped spinel crystal. MgAl_2O_4: Cr^<3+>, and ruby crystal. Al_2O_4 Cr^<3+> are fabricated. The lifetime of spinel and ruby crystal decrease with temperature. Lifetimes and temperature coefficients of the spinel crystals (τ=10 ms. -37μs/K) were about 3 times larger than that of the ruby crystals (τ=4ms, -10μs/K).
